Image 7-5-19 at 8.44 AMI’ve never heard of the Mystery Quilt Challenge and Contest. What is it?

If you’re not familiar with the Mystery Quilt Challenge, it is a weekly mystery quilt reveal held once a year as a fundraiser for Project Linus. Registration is a $15 donation to Project Linus and participants can specify our chapter to receive the entire $15. Each week a “mystery clue” is revealed. Quilters of all levels of expertise who register for the challenge will be given detailed instructions and videos as they complete a quilt. The quilt challenge will be followed by a contest for participants who are interested in entering their finished quilts. Prizes will be awarded to the quilt that raises the most money for Project Linus through an online voting process. (Participation in the contest is OPTIONAL.)

Does the Mystery Quilt Challenge have a Facebook page?

Yes! We have a Facebook page where participants share their blocks and finished quilts. https://www.facebook.com/groups/848183768557929/

A Local Thank You!

Our Chapter received this e-mail last week:

“Good afternoon, I work for a local mortuary. I was handed one of your blankets this weekend while picking up an infant from our local hospital as the family did not have a “special” blanket for their lost child. It was such an amazing thing to receive for this family and I wanted to know if there is some way to receive a few of your blankets to have on hand for such an occasion.
It brought such comfort and joy to that family to see their child in a personalized blanket instead of a “hospital” wrap.
Thank you again for all you do to make troubled times a little more comforting.”

We are so pleased we were indirectly able to provide comfort to this family.  Several special blankets were delivered to the mortuary yesterday.  Thank you Blanketeers for donating blankets that provide comfort and love to those in need.

Here’s a thank you e-mail received recently from a grateful parent:

Hi:
Our sweet daughter made a trip to Auburn Faith for dehydration this morning. She was feeling pretty crummy and her RN could tell she needed something to make her feel better. She left for a moment and returned with 3 beautiful blankets. My daughter picked her favorite blanket and felt comfortable enough to finally sleep. Thank you so much for making this beautiful blanket and making my baby feel better. I know she will cherish it for years to come ❤️
PS….she’s feeling much better now 😉
Kind Regards,

Thank you Blanketeers, for all you do!

Info: Our Nevada County Chapter, Part 1

Note:  This is the first of a series of articles providing up-to-date information on our Project Linus Chapter.  This article was e-mailed to our group in September, 2018.

There has been quite a bit of behind-the-scenes administrative activity at the Chapter in the last few months.  We’ve gained quite a few new-to-our-Chapter Blanketeers.  As a result, we’re reaching out to all volunteers, aka “Blanketeers”, and supporters of our Nevada County Chapter in an effort to update/clarify information on Project Linus and our Nevada County Chapter.  This is the first of a series articles as to what Project Linus, and specifically our Nevada County Chapter, is all about and what we do.

Nevada County encompasses a large area, most of which is rural, stretching from just south of Combie Road in Auburn all the way to Truckee.  The Nevada County Chapter was established in March of 2005 as a way of giving back to a Community we love.  We’re a small Chapter—-we like to think “small but mighty”—-and lack the fanfare of a larger metropolitan Chapter, but we have a strong group of supporters.  We distribute blankets to the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital in Grass Valley, the Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee, Child Advocates, Child Protective Services, domestic violence agencies and occasionally, agencies assisting the homeless (sadly, there are homeless children).  When opening the Chapter, we pledged to keep all donated blankets in Nevada County—-unless a donor specifies otherwise—-and we’ve stayed true to that commitment.

Our small Nevada County Chapter has many Blanketeers, volunteers and supporters.  We maintain an e-mail list for use in distributing information about the Chapter, including thank you notes, kudos and general group info.  This e-mail list is private and not shared.  Choosing to receive e-mail updates is strictly an individual choice—-if you’d rather not receive info from our Chapter, just let me know and we’ll “unsubscribe” you.  This Chapter blog also has general information including updates, blanket guidelines, donation drop-off locations, etc.

Donations are a very personal thing.  A donor has complete control over where they donate and to whom they donate.  Project Linus does not have “rules” about who can donate where.  A gift is a gift and our Chapter has the responsibility to be grateful and appreciative, no matter what.  To be clear, while we encourage and appreciate support of our Nevada County Chapter, anyone can donate a blanket, blanket making materials or make a monetary donation to any Project Linus Chapter.  There are no territorial restrictions and a person is not required to “register” with any Chapter to volunteer and/or donate.  Having said all that, we are continually mindful of the fact the Nevada County Chapter could not do what we do without the support of our dedicated volunteers and we appreciate all who support our Chapter.

Next up, blanket guidelines.  Stay tuned and until then, thank you for your support!

We received this e-mail this morning.  What a great way to start the day! Nevada County Chapter Blanketeers—this one’s for YOU!  Thank you for your support!
Hello,
My 3 year old daughter broke her elbow (or so we think) last night but was comforted by your beautiful quilt. The effort and love is obvious and I sew as well so I appreciate all your fine work and care. The Poem on the tag had me in tears as both my daughter and I have shared many in the past 12 hours.
I just wanted to extend my deep gratitude for what you do. I was very much a “Linus kid” with the thumb and my “silky”. Both my daughters are too.  My daughter is a thumb sucker and unfortunately it is that arm that she injured to make her matters worse she cannot comfort herself that way. She picked a beautiful quilt with yellows and reds and it will be cherished for years to come.
With lots of love for what you do.
Sincerely,
(name withheld for privacy)
Truckee, Ca.

Thank You From a Grateful Parent

From a grateful parent:

“Tonight I laid our blanket on our daughter’s bed; a year and a half after first receiving it at the Hospital. She had been transferred to the hospital when a routine blood draw returned abnormal results. She was 6 months old. I had watched her lifeless body be transferred by ambulance; an image I’ll never forget. When they placed her in the hospital bed, it resembled more of a cage- too big for a bassinet, too little for a bed. Tubes and monitors were hooked to her and the room was buzzing around me. The nurse brought in this pink blanket and it seemed to swallow my daughter. But, I had come with nothing. It was supposed to just be a routine check at the doctor’s office. And there I was, with a inconsolable child and a pink blanket.

Today, this blanket is our oldest’s favorite. She sleeps with it nightly. While she was too young to remember her sister at that time, it somehow brings her comfort and me, too. Both daughters are thriving, growing like weeds. We are lucky. We count our blessings. And when we do, we think of you. Thank you to the souls who bring comfort to those who you may never know; you’re doing God’s work! We are forever thankful!”

This is the reason we do what we do!  Thank you to our Blanketeers who provide comfort to children in crisis.  You are appreciated!

For those who did not see the article featured in The Union regarding blankets delivered to the Camp Fire evacuees in early December, the article is here.

Blankets donated to We Care by the Nevada County Chapter of Project Linus were part of this initial delivery.

We appreciate the support we received for participating in this quilt drive!
